the city of georgetown engaged avalanche consulting, an austin-based economic development consulting firm, to conduct a target industry and workforce analysis for georgetown. in phase one, the consulting team developed a workforce analysis. by creating a workforce analysis, georgetown staff, leaders, and residents will better understand our community’s existing labor force – which extends beyond the city limits – and in turn help prioritize focus areas for education, quality of life, and other investments. this included a performance evaluation of georgetown’s existing target industries – assessing recent job creation trends, changes in the overall industry, and new assets available to support local growth.
the consulting team then recommended updated target industries for the city of georgetown’s economic development activities – including target cluster profiles that describe global trends affecting the industry, business factors that influence growth, and local sales messages that support location in georgetown. workforce is one of the most discussed topics in economic development today. communities creating the most jobs today generally draw from a large pool of skilled workers, have strong relationships between their educational institutions and business community, and communicate their workforce opportunities to both residents and employers. avalanche consulting’s most recent economic index survey of over 150 economic developers around the county found that 90% of survey respondents believe that having a skilled workforce and aligned training programs have become even more important over the past year, and developing a talented workforce is the number one focus of many economic development organizations (edos). more residents employed in high-skill industries means more disposable income invested into the economy – a greater ability to invest in housing, a greater demand for quality of life amenities, and more support for schools and other children’s programming.
in late 2018, southeast gas worked with garner economics llc to develop a target industry strategy (tis) and conduct a competitive analysis of the 18-county southeast gas region that takes into account the current state of the area’s economic assets. the tis offers a road map for southeast gas and its economic development partners to create economic opportunities for citizens in the region by targeting industries that are a good fit for creating or expanding in the region. the first part of this engagement was to conduct an assets and challenges assessment of the 18-county region. we applied many of the same criteria to assess the region that is used by corporations to evaluate communities for possible investment. likewise, by knowing its strengths, southeast gas and our economic development partners can better leverage them in efforts to attract businesses.
as a complement to the assessment of the physical structure of the region, we conducted a focus group of southeast gas’ key stakeholders and economic development partners. to understand the existing industries and the labor within the southeast gas region, we undertook a quantitative analysis of the labor and current industry composition of the region. given the diversity of this territory, garner economics divided the region into two subregions: north and south. the map above illustrates the subregions for the purposes of the garner economics target industries study. the tis builds the analysis and identifies and provides the rationale for eight core target sectors and one local target that will both diversify the industry mix in the region, as well as build on current areas of strengths. to request a copy of the full target industry strategy and competitive analysis for the southeast gas region, contact us.
