the matrix is a birdâs eye view of competition with an in-depth analysis of their offering. while the competitive analysis matrix provides a clear overview of available features and services, it does not divulge the direct relationship between feature ârichnessâ and customer experience. in 2018, the chief technology officer of a large european grocery retailer partnered with thoughtworks to go digital. for a customer, a premium grocery experience feels like a seamless service that requires a combination of impeccable digital experience and physical services. by identifying the competitionâs strengths and weaknesses, we formulated some key competitive advantages with respect to user experience – our recommendation for the client was to start with a click & collect solution. determined to create a premium and frictionless click & collect experience, we invested time into understanding how such an experience feels.
in parallel, we were testing and documenting our experience of the clientâs main competitors. the following is an example of how we put that information together. however, more often than not, user perspective is left out of the mix or not dealt with in a strategic manner. this can be done by investing time in talking to customers and experiencing their services, first-hand where possible. our guidance is that teams strategizing or developing solutions should expose themselves to what is happening in the industry at large and the wider market. thanks also to sanjeev seshagiri athreya for sharing his knowledge of retail with me, and to andrea piovani for his feedback on this article. we believe designers are thinkers as much as they are makers.
recently it occurred to me to design an online bookstore. to get an idea of what my site will be like, i start the step by exploring what is happening in the market by conducted competitive analysis against the main page of each competitorâs site. what do usersâ feel when they go to the main page? i conducted observation to every main page of the competitorâs site. i can act as a user as much as possible to feel whatâs really happening.
